Paul Strand

In these photos I tried to imitate Paul Strand with his abstract lines using shadows.

Ansel Adams

I took these photos at Squaw Valley and tried my best to imitate Ansel Adams' high contrast landscapes by adjusting shutter speed.

Black and White Series

Paul Strand
Paul Strands style of photography consisted of abstract shapes and lines. Here, there are lines created by artificial light placed directly onto a cubed shelf.

This next photo has more of a head on picture of the cubed shelf, with some shadows created with how the light was positioned.

Sebastiao Selgado
Sebastiao Selgado's photographs emphasized form. In this photo you are able to see the form of Cailin's hand.

This is another photo showcasing her hands.

This is another photo emphasizing the texture of her hands. This picture could be considered a low key photo.

Ansel Adams
Ansel Adams photographs consisted of high contrast landscapes. I tried to imitate that style in the photo above and following.
There is a contrast between the trees and the sky.

 Ansel Adams
This is a photo of Half Dome in Yosemite National park. I took this photo while
on vacation. This photo reminds me of the few that Ansel Adams took while there.

Sebastio Salgado
In this photo i wanted to show how hard these horses work to bring people on these 8+ mile trails.
As you can see there are drop offs that anyone could easily slip and fall off.

Black and White Photos

For my first photo I tried to imitate the work of Paul Strand. I tried to find a building that used intresting shapes for my subject. I like this photo because of the contrast between the geometric shaped building and the organic lines of the concrete, railing, and shadows.
For my second photo I tried to imitate Ansel Adams. I was unable to find a good spot for a landscape so I took a flower photo similar to several that he created.
My final photo was taken using Sebastiao Salgado's style. I went into Sacramento and I asked a homeless man if he would allow me to take his photo and he agreed. I tried to make it feel like more than a portrait by not taking a picture of him looking up at me.

Converting To Black and White Photos

This is the original photo before it was cropped and converted to black and white. I decided to keep the green channel because it seemed to have the most detail.
This the photo in black and white. I like that all of the details are still easily distinguishable after the change and that it did not become a muddy photo.

The tan/white colors represent wisdom and simplicity.

Green represents calmness and nature. The dog being nature and him
 laying down, calmness.

I love the contrast on this photo. This can also be a low key photo.

The dark areas of the gecko stand out against the
 white background creating contrast.

This one doesn't have the best contrast.

This photo was taken in my backyard. The cork bark is the pop of
color along with the rocks underneath the plants.

This was also taken in my backyard. This represents the golden point.

This is one of the portraits I toke of Nicole for the complementary color series. Converting it to gray, you can pay more attention to the features of her face rather than color being the dominant feature.

Here again, instead of color being the focus, it is the organic curves of Nicole's face.

The original photo has the dominant colors of pink and yellow. With it being converted to black and white, line and shape are more dominant. You can now see the veins of the flower petal, and the shape in which they make. I believe there is also golden spiral in this photo as well.
